What is Pine Bark Extract?

Pine Bark Extract (32% Proanthocyanadins) has been shown to be an extraordinarily powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger, more powerful than even Vitamins C or E. It is widely known that free radicals, such as stress, air pollution, cigarette smoke and chemicals, can cause damaging effects upon your person.  In addition to being one of your body’s most powerful allies, Pine bark has the extra benefit of working well with other essential nutrients in a complete health supplement.

How does it work?

It is an extensively studied natural antioxidant that has been found to be useful in maintaining the health of blood vessel walls and circulation. It works, at least in part, by blocking hazardous molecules known as free radicals from being absorbed by the body.  Free radicals have also been shown to damage DNA (genetic material) and cells.

Where does it come from?

It comes from a large forest of millions of acres in South-West France near the famous Bordeaux region.  That forest is a plantation of French maritime pine trees.  The pine trees are cultivated over a period of 30-50 years.

Safety / Side Effects

To date, no serious adverse effects have been reported.

Studies Involving Sperm

Pycnogenol (French maritime pine tree bark extract) improves the morphology of spermatozoa.  The percentage of non-deformed sperms in sub-fertile men was increased by 99% after supplementation with Pycnogenol for three months. (Roseff, 2002)

Interactions

Pine bark is reportedly safe.  Because of its power, some allergic reaction is theoretically possible, though none have ever been reported.
